About the Greater New Orleans AFL-CIOFor more than 100 years, the Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO has been the voice, arms, and legs of working families in the four-parish area of Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines. We serve to coordinate and advance the interests of our affiliated local unions and their members throughout the community. As the Preamble of our Constitution states: "At the collective bargaining table, in the community, in the exercise of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, we shall responsibly serve the interests of all the American people. "We pledge ourselves to the more effective organization of working men and women; to the securing to them of full recognition and enjoyment of the rights to which they are justly entitled; to the achievement of ever higher standards of living and working conditions; to the attainment of security for all the people; to the enjoyment of the leisure which their skills make possible; and to the strengthening and extension of our way of life and the fundamental freedoms which are the basis of our democratic society. "We shall combat resolutely the forces which seek to undermine the democratic institutions of our nation and to enslave the human soul. We shall strive always to win full respect for the dignity of the human individual whom our unions serve." Those words may have been crafted by union leaders 25 years ago, but they still speak to the power of the collective vision - and will - which continues to drive the GNO AFL-CIO, its officers, leaders, and members to this day. Another article of our Constitution also does a good job of fleshing out our "mission statement" with some concrete objectives of what our central labor council means to achieve in our geographical jurisdiction. The Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO is designed: "…To serve as a means of exchanging information among affiliated bodies on matters of common interest; "…To provide aid, cooperation and assistance to affiliated local unions and other affiliated bodies in their common and individual endeavors; "…To propose, support and promote legislation favorable to and to oppose legislation detrimental of the interest of workers and organized labor; "…To encourage workers to register and vote, to exercise their full rights and responsibilities of citizenship, and to perform their rightful part in the political life of the local, state, and national communities…" Solidarity, collective pursuit, common defense, coordinated work - call it what one may - it adds up to the glue that holds all the unions around New Orleans together no matter how different and varied the daily work and craft of our members, so that we can assure mutual benefits for working families in this community. It is not easy, but we work hard to do it. Some in the business community seem exercised by our very existence, but for working families and our members, we make the difference every day! |
